So I’ve been spending some downtime converting some old projects to AS3, one of which is an old Webcam to Ascii experiment.
While it worked OK in AS2 it was pretty lacking in the speed department, meaning you couldn’t convert at any great resolution (about 20*20 ascii ‘pixels’ was tops). In AS3 however it’s a whole different story, as this demo shows …

(click the image to launch, latest FP9 & a webcam required, right click to go fullscreen)
Oh yeah, cheers Tink for the Flex help, it’s clever this Flex stuff, init?!

Bought a shiney new webcam last weekend to play with Flash 8’s webcam input and the new Bitmap functions a bit more, here’s the results so far.
One thing, my camera does 320*240 but most cheapo webcams are only 160*120, so not sure how this will look on a lower res camera (as I’m doing an image scale up by 2), be interested to find out.
And of course they all look a lot better moving, so if you have a webcam click the image to launch the app…
Friday Night Cam, for that ‘after the pub feeling’…

Cube Cam (looks really nice moving)

Spikey Cam

…and I can’t believe no-one else has done this yet…

Very nice new site from Grant Skinner to house all his Flash experiements. The timeline is nicely done, and some of the latest F8 stuff (particularly the webcam interaction stuff) is really cool…
