Study links ’spirituality’ to brain damage?

February 12th, 2010

Now this is something I can believe in…

Kind of related, the comments in the original Fark post led me to The Brick Testament, absolute genius…
Brick Testament

…reckon everyone needs to brush up on the law section if nothing else, good to know for example when you should stone your children, why you must marry your sister in-law, why you must stone homosexuals and of course when you’re allowed and how much to pay for raping a woman (50 sheckles, or about £8.50 according to xe.com, seems pretty reasonable).

Vague science headlines

August 4th, 2009

Seems even the scientists are having a hard time getting funding these days and are turning to sensationalist headlines to get eyeballs. Two recently…

  • Humans glow in visible light … except that ‘visible light’ is “1,000 times less intense than the levels to which our naked eyes are sensitive” … so, errr, not very ‘visible’ then is it?
  • Transparent aluminium is ‘new state of matter’ … which is cool, except that in reality it was only “nearly invisible” to “extreme ultraviolet radiation”, effected “a spot with a diameter less than a twentieth of the width of a human hair” and lasted “an estimated 40 femtoseconds” (40 millionths of a nanosecond or 40*-15 of a second) …. so, errr, ‘transparent’ as long as you see in extreme UV, have great eye sight and don’t blink, ever!

Yeah, I know, these are ground breaking in their own rights and may lead to amazing things in the future, but surely they should be working on something practical like jetpacks or flying cars instead if they want good headlines?

Nice Tron2 viral

July 22nd, 2009

Tron2

There’s some info here about a nice viral idea for Tron2…Tron goes viral?.

The interesting thing about it is I think is each person only received a small piece of the overall viral, and it relied on bloggers to post about it and create what is basically an ad-hoc social network to solve the puzzle. Nice way to get people working and talking together and build a bit of a buzz!

Tripit launches iPhone app

April 15th, 2009

Tripit is a very handy (free) website that helps organise your travel plans. You simply forward all your confirmation emails to the site; airline, hotels, car hire etc, and it automatically builds a single itinerary for your entire trip.

I’ve been using it for a few years now and find it invaluable for keeping everything in one place and easy to access. It also adds handy meta-info such as weather at your destination, maps, routes from the airport to your hotel etc. You can then share this info with others, see who’s going to be travelling at the same time, and export the entire thing to your calendar.

The only down side was, when actually on your trip you used to have to access the site to see your plans on your iPhone, which meant finding a wifi hotspot or internet cafe, or paying costly data roaming charges.

Which is why I was happy to find out that they just launched an app for the iPhone that stores all your trip details offline.

TripIt for iPhone gives you…

Easy Access: See all the details of your TripIt itineraries, whether you’re online or offline.

iPhone Integration: Link to airlines, hotels, restaurants and more, right from your itinerary.

Maps and Directions: Get maps and directions straight from your itinerary at the tap of a finger.

Quick Phone Calls: Direct dial phone numbers from your itinerary on your iPhone.

It’s kinda basic (doesn’t include all the meta-info for example) but functional, and the timing couldn’t be better for me as I’m in the middle of a trip to S.E. Asia at the moment.

If you travel a lot (or at all) you really should try Tripit. Feel free to add me (oldskool73) as a contact.
