Review - eDimensional Stereo 3D glasses

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

I’ve seen adverts for 3d glasses for some time, the old TNT graphics cards use to come with support for ‘revelator’ glasses and the nVidia drivers had stero support built in for many years. However due to the way these glasses work you’ve always needed a CRT monitor with a high refresh rate (~120hz) to see the effect. Moving back to a mahoosive CRT and an ancient gfx card isn’t really an option if you want to play any newer games, so I (and I’m sure many others) have never really had a chance to try them out.

E-D 3d Glasses package

Recently I noticed an advert for these eDimensional Wireless 3D Glasses that claim to work on a standard LCD screen and promise you will “experience the latest in virtual reality technology with 3D images that float inside and outside of your monitor” in “all of your favorite gaming titles”. Hmmm, but as they were realatively cheap (sub £50) I thought I’d give them a go. There seems to be very little info on these glasses out there on the net post ‘05, which is about when nVidia stopped supporting it’s consumer stereo 3d driver. I though a quick review could be useful for anyone else interested in giving stereoscopic 3d gaming a try on an LCD.

Crysis… the prettiest game ever!

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

I’ve just finished playing Crysis for the PC and have been constantly blown away by the graphics over the 10 or so hours it took me. The game itself is ok… the AI’s a bit dumb and for all out action it’s not a patch on CallOfDuty4 (which is the best game I’ve played for a very long time!)… but graphically Crysis stands alone.

I’ve put together a little gallery of shots I took in the game (using F12), these are all real in game shots, no tweaking or post processing, and of course it all looks ever better when it’s moving. If you have a hefty PC and graphics card I’d recommend you give it a try, if only for the eye candy. (It ran fine for me at 1024×768 with everything on max and the extra DX10 hacks on XP with a Quad Core 2.4 & 640Mb GTS).

Quake2 in Flash!

Ok, I lied!

So it’s not quite (err, at all…) playable yet, and I may have done a little photoshoppery on the screenshot above but still… a Quake2 map & textures loaded, parsed and running in the Flash player via Papervision from Tim Knip, very cool indeed… aaah the good old days!

(Edit - just wanted to point out this is not my code, it’s from Tim Knip, who posted it to the Papervision3d mailing list. If you are into this kind of stuff there’s some exciting stuff going on on the list there, join up!)

Wiimote & Flash, first two way communication tests!

Monday, January 29th, 2007

I’ve been messing with my Wiimotes and Flash over the weekend, and have finally managed to cobble together various programs and enable full two way communication between them. This means that Flash can get all the controller data from the Wiimote, including 3d acceleration, pitch, roll, all the buttons, nunchuk & classic controller, pointer orientation etc (for up to 7 Wiimotes eventually!) as well as control features of the Wiimote such as the LED’s and the rumble feature. Tasty!

I’m not posting yet how I did it, as it’s pretty hacky at the moment and there’s a lot I’d like to clean up, but here’s a video of it in action…

Wii browser launched!

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

Didn’t get ’round to blogging it, but I managed to pickup a Wii last week from HMV and have been enjoying playing it a lot (I’m a Pro at bowling now! :) .

Anyway I’ve just noticed on Digg that the Wii browser’s been launched and it apparently contains Flash & Ajax support. Woohoo, this could be very cool if it plays Flash games nicely… more to come I’m sure.
